Praying with Shameless Audacity

Take it from me, the result of your blessing is directly related to the posture of your heart in prayer.

While there's no "right" or "wrong" way to pray, I believe that the way we approach God in prayer can have a direct result in the outcome of our prayers. I know this from my own experiences as well as examples we can unpack in the scriptures.

Jesus teaches us about prayer in Luke 11 - To our Holy Father with SHAMELESS AUDACITY, humbly, and just straight up.

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. -Luke 11:8

Let's take a journey through some real life people in the bible who are beautiful examples of shameless, audacious prayer warriors:

1. Joshua

We can also take a lesson from Joshua in the story of his prayer to make the sun stand still. (Joshua 10:13) In an epic battle of 5 Amorite kings conspiring to destroy Gibeon for partnering as allies with Israel, word was sent to Joshua in Gilgal. Joshua and his army traveled all night to sneak up and surprise the opponents. Before receiving victory over the Amorites that day, Joshua boldly prayed the sun stand still which enabled more sunlight for them to clearly see and defeat the enemy in one long, swift day.

For more on this, I encourage you to pick up the book, Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick.

It's an INCREDIBLE resource that will challenge you to enhance your prayer life and will inspire a deeper faith in God's miraculous and limitless power!

2. Hannah

Ever since I read about Hannah's heart cries, I feel like she's become my friend. I especially revisit her story when I'm feeling so overtaken by the deep desires of my heart to become a wife and mama. Most days it's easy to keep the faith and wait patiently...but there are other days where the longing is agonizing. This she knows all too well. You can meet Hannah in 1 Samuel.

After been teased and bullied for years for not being able to have children. One night after dinner, Hannah just had enough! She stood up, marched down to the temple and with her agonizing heart prayed and wept bitterly to the Lord vowing to dedicate her son if God would just miraculously bless her with a baby boy. She prayed so long and so hard she was actually accused of being drunk by Eli the priest! Fast forward 9+ months and God DID answer her prayer! She named her son, Samuel, dedicated him to the Lord as a toddler and Samuel grew up to become a prophet, priest and the last judge over Israel before the people demanded to be ruled by a king.

I admire Hannah for having the guts to look a bit messy and undignified in front of God. That's straight SHAMELESSNESS right there!

3. Elijah

The prophet Elijah is another man that stands out to me when it comes to shameless, audacious prayers. In an all-out Holy hoedown at Mount Carmel, the prophet Elijah goes toe-to-toe with King Ahab along with 450 false prophets of Baal AND the 400 prophets of Asherah. (That's 850 pagan prophets and one evil king against ONE Mighty Man of God!)  It's a pretty gruesome scene filled with all kinds of crazy, but ultimately Elijah challenges them to call fire down from heaven after an few year long drought in the land. This is BY FAR one of my most favorite stories in scripture (1 Kings 18:16-39). ....Oh and stay tuned because there's a special feature coming up on this week's #FridayFaves about this!

So...What can we learn from these stories?

Well, first let's point out that all of these 3 examples are from the Old Testament? Did you catch that. The reason I point that out is because I have a lot of people confess to me their challenge in understanding or enjoying OT stories. These 3 are pretty fantastic, right? So...we serve the same God, right? And you believe Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, right? (Hebrews 13:8) ... Okay so then rest assured, Dear One, God hears your prayers and is JUST as capable and able to come through miraculously for YOU as He has for our friends!

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. -James 1:6

So let's not stay tangled up in our heads....we gotta keep our head in heaven and feet on the ground! He doesn't want us to be double-minded or like a wave tossed by the wind- NO!

He wants us to be anchored, unwavering, unmoving, decisive, clear-headed, stable, confident to whom we're praying and how capable He is to perform miracles!

When you're struggling and seeking answers, here's my advice:

  1. Get in the Word. It's all written out there! Take Holy Spirit with you on the journey of your reading and seeking. He is our Paraclete (Homework: Look it up).
  2. Pray - Our conversations with God in prayer will reveal His will, if we learn to LISTEN.
  3. Listen - He will send specific people at specific times to speak His truth which will align with His word and His character and affirm what He's been teaching you through scripture reading and prayer.
  4. Watch - Be expectant to receive dreams and visions! We too often overlook this powerful way God communicates with us because we doubt and question if it's just a manipulation of our subconscious mind merely reflecting our fleshly desire. In reality, this is one of His most profound ways of SHOWING our spirit what our eyes can't yet see. Don't dismiss or discredit your dreams and visions if they bring you a deep sense of peace and joy and confidence. That's GOD SHOWING you what's up!

Is it a PRAYER Problem or a PRAISE Problem?

Have you subscribed to my YouTube channel yet?

Ever feel like you're in the thick of the battle...praying your guts out yet not seeming to find any relief? Gosh, I've SO been there! Many times....

May I suggest that it may be a shift of focus from prayer to PRAISE...

Sing for Joy

Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises. Psalm 98:4 (NASB)

Turn your prayers into praise and watch how things begin to shift! Peace and relief are on the way when you turn your prayers into praise...

Instead, glorify his mighty works, singing songs of praise (Job 36:24)

For real. Try it. Crank up some music and just go all out in worship. I assure you, it will be nearly impossible to stay down when your arms are raised and your dancing before your King!

The young women will dance for joy, and the men- old and young-will join in the celebration. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing. - Jeremiah 31:13)

And for you research nerds like me, here's an awesome article I found from  Harvard Neuroscience Institute's article "Dancing and the Brain." . Check it out!

Take a trip down memory lane

Look at your HIStory...He has never left you! Meditate on your HIStory and recall all the times you felt downright down and out in despair or depression and remember how He brought you out. Start THANKING Him for His provision, deliverance, healing, breakthrough and peace you have experienced before and believe He's at work on your behalf. Don't let the devil deceive you into believing you're outside His grace. Refute those lies and begin decreeing and declaring with your God-given authority with boldness and audacity!

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. - Luke 11:8 NIV

God will not violate His own promises.

Seek the Lord in prayer and ask God to help you recall promises in His Word that are specific to your need. If you are new to the bible, that's okay! My favorite tool is the YouVersion Bible App and Connect with me on there! --You'll get to see my raw, real, unfiltered study notes and highlights and join me in some amazing daily devotionals! Use the search and type in a keyword relative to your request (examples: healing, relationships, wisdom, breakthrough) and find verses that resonate with you.

Pray scriptures over yourself

Write them down and put them in plain view. Stop and reflect regularly to get out of the spin and find rest in Him.

Make it personal. Claim the promises by shifting to a personal pronoun. (See what I mean in the bold words below.)

Here are some beautiful blanket promises to get you started:

  • God has never and will never leave me or forsake me. (Deuteronomy 31:6)
  • Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4)
  • God works ALL things together for my good because He loves me. (Romans 8:28)

Tip: Ask Siri to remind you at a certain time of day to have a "Selah" moment. A chance to pause and ponder in meditative prayer. Sit and seek what the Lord is saying break in the day!

I'd be honored to stand with you in prayer and praise.

Warring in the Spirit

2016 was a year of being faced with challenges that I embraced as an invitation for growth. Most of it was hard. REALLY hard as I struggled with a broken heart, massive confusion, and the resounding question of "What Now?" It was a year of learning the reality of spiritual warfare in a whole new way. Today I'd like to share with you 4 fantastic elements of Warring in the Spirit:

1. Internal Investigation

When I was in the midst of the battle, feeling entirely disconnected with myself in disharmony and internal dissension I fought hard to overcome any and all areas of myself that may have been sick or out of alignment. It took dedicated and intentional time with the Lord to reveal the roots of hurt and heal my heart.

Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong- then guide me on the road to eternal life.
— Psalm 139:22-23 MSG

Part of that process was participating in Kris Vallotton's eCourse on Bethel.tv, "Spirit Wars."

One {of the many} things that was highlighted to me is the fact that we're not "bipolar" beings but actually TRIPOLAR {Body, Soul and Spirit}. I put in a ton of work to address each facet of my being to come into a pure, clean place with myself and with God.

The result = HARMONY. My connection to God has become stronger than ever. I've also become more comfortable being me and embracing how He's made me and see beyond into how He continues to develop and prepare me for the plans He has for me.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future.
— Jeremiah 29:11

2. Observation

I've also learned to see beyond the natural in others as well. My discerner is working now better than ever before. I've always been observant, but now when I see when someone else may be "out of alignment" I ask God to show me if it's a result from a heart posture issue that's become a pattern or if what I see is a one-time, uncharacteristic behavior.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
— Ephesians 6:12 NIV

3. Intercession

Learn to pray into what you see in the spirit and intercede in prayer by aligning your heart with Heaven; praying into His will for others. I consider this an honor as I get to "see into" the reality of what's happening instead of coming to a place inaccurate assessment {judgement}. This is the blessing of intercession!

We all have a story, a struggle and a soul. What you see is only a piece of the puzzle. Stand. Pray. Believe and SEE God's glory manifest in personal growth and spiritual maturity.

4. Celebration

I honestly can't count how many times I've seen the fruit of the spirit flourish in myself and others when I've obediently prayed into situations that seemed challenging and bleak. I've watched countless people grow past their limitations, set free from strongholds, delivered from unhealthy mindsets, repent from unwise behavior patterns, and GROW into a beautiful place of peace, harmony, strength, confidence and purpose. I've watched hardened hearts become soft. I've watched leaders rise. I've been blessed to be a witness!

  • Learn to see beyond the natural
  • Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit
  • Lean into intercessory prayer
  • Don't focus on the problem, pray into the solution.
  • Don't talk about it, pray about it.
  • Watch with excitement and expectation to see how God comes through!
